Transform your little snow lovers into Anna, Elsa and Olaf with our easy face painting ideas, inspired by the Disney movie Frozen. Kids of all ages love to dress up and sing along to this cartoon classic. Whether you’re planning a special morning at the movies, or just an afternoon of fun at home, here are some fun makeup ideas for the characters from Frozen.
Choosing a character
There are lots of great personalities in Frozen, but the easiest ones for face painting fun are Princess Elsa, Princess Anna, Olaf (the snowman) and Sven (the reindeer). Once you have your character ideas in place, choose child friendly makeup like the Pure Poppet range which is easy to apply and doesn’t contain any chemical nasties. What’s more, when it’s time to “Let it Go” and take off the makeup you’ll be pleased you chose a water soluble, easy to remove product.
Top tip: have some pictures of the character you are going to create on hand as you work. These will be handy for your own reference as well as keeping your child busy while you transform them!
Princess Elsa
Elsa is the older sister, gifted with the ability to create snow, so her signature colour is icy blue. Start with a light foundation, moisturiser or tinted sunscreen. This will help the colours adhere to your little one’s skin. Elsa has thin arched eyebrows and ‘cats eye’ liner. In the movie, she wears purple eyeshadow, but any shade of blue or mauve will be effective. Wash the colour over the whole upper lid to the brow, then deepen it over the eye. Raspberry lips in a shimmer lipstick will give her a glamorous smile. A pale pink blush on the roses of the cheeks will stop her from looking too cold. If you have a snowflake template (or a steady hand!) you might like to add a few white or blue snowflakes across her cheeks to make it very clear this is Elsa.
Princess Anna
Anna is the determined and courageous younger sister. Start with a foundation similar to Elsa’s. Give Anna her signature pinky-orange eyeshadow. She doesn’t need Elsa’s sophisticated eyeliner, but when you put a rosy blush on her cheeks, twirl a bit on the tip of her nose to show how cold she gets. Emphasise her youth with a sprinkling of freckles (dotted on in brown pencil), concentrated over the centre of her face and nose. Plain lip balm or pink tinted gloss will finish off her pretty, natural look. If you are using a setting powder, you might want to use it to add the unique streak visible in Anna’s hair.
Olaf
Olaf is a bit of a clown, so don’t be afraid to be quite bold! Start with a white base all over the face. Draw brown eyebrows half way up the forehead. Next, add a black circle around each eye, from the (natural) eyebrow to the top of the cheek. Make the outline thicker at the top, as it crosses the brows. You can even draw a black dot on the centre of each eyelid for truly cartoon-like eyes! Now colour an orange carrot all the way down your child’s nose. Using black again, draw a half-oval shaped smile around your child’s mouth, and fill it in, leaving a rectangle of white from below the nose to the upper lip for his two white teeth. Cheeky and cheerful!
Sven
Sven is a great choice for kids who don’t have the patience for full face makeup, as you can easily create a recognisable reindeer across the upper face. Start with white eye sockets, from below the eyebrow to about 1 cm below the eyes. Next sponge brown over the eyebrows and cross to the temples, down the face until level with the nostrils. Blend in the edges so you don’t have a tidemark across the face! Next, sponge on white over the nostrils and lower nose. Use a black pencil to draw in the tip of the nose. Splotch some large white dots over the brown areas of the cheeks and voila - instant reindeer!

Laying a good foundation
Every makeup kit should include a foundation, whether it’s a light day time tinted moisturiser, or a heavier cream for evenings. It’s also handy to have a good concealer as part of your basic makeup kit. Use it to cover up dark circles from lack of sleep or to hide spots and blemishes.
It's all in the eyes
Change your look by expanding your colour repertoire. Basic black is a great place to start with mascara and liner. Or, easily change your everyday look and try experimenting with colour? Eye shadows can come in every colour of the rainbow and require a good application technique to look just right. Your local chemist or department store can help with new colours that will suit your face, and show you how to apply them correctly, too.
Get cheeky
Blush is often overlooked in makeup kits, but this essential item will help to lift your face and give you some definition. Choose from cream, mousse, loose powder or pressed powder.
Luscious Lips
Lip stick, lip stain, lip gloss, lip liner…. no makeup kit is complete without at least one lip covering. If you’re not keen on sharing ‘testers’ with other shoppers, try new colours on your fingertips as the tone is surprisingly close to your natural lip colour.
The right applicators
Complete your home cosmetic kit with sponges and a variety of thick and thin brushes. In a portable make up kit, cotton balls, cotton tips and tissues can be handy extras. Don’t forget to clean your brushes with a simple wash in the sink from time to time to avoid them getting clogged.
Make-up removal
It’s important to remove your makeup at the end of the day so that your skin can breathe and you can wake up looking fresh. A quick and convenient way to do this is with makeup removal wipes. A packet of wipes is easy to fit into your travel makeup kit or handbag, too.
Age before beauty
Nothing lasts forever and makeup is no different. It’s a good idea to clean out your makeup kit periodically to keep your supplies clean and in working order. Mascara lasts about three months, and foundations about six to twelve months. Most other products will keep for one to two years. Saving cosmetics that are past their prime might seem harmless enough, but many products can harbour bacteria, which can irritate your skin. Old makeup can also change colour or separate over time, and lose the impact it once had.

Kids love face painting. It’s the ultimate in creative play! Help your kids have some fun expanding their imaginations this weekend or school holidays by teaching them how to paint their faces! It’s easier than you think to get started.
What you’ll need for face paint fun!
Firstly, you’ll need to make sure your child decides on the design they want, and you’ll need to make sure it’s a design you can definitely help them achieve. You Tube and Pinterest will come in handy here if you need some inspiration or design tips. Our natural face paint packs contain everything you need to get started.
If your kids have decided to have their face painted on the spur of the moment, try our homemade face paint recipe (below). Use makeup brushes and sponges, or even cotton tips and cotton balls, to apply the homemade face paint. This handy face paint can only be used once as it won’t keep well, but it’s a great option for a bit of impromptu fun.
Whatever face paint you use, keep an apron or old towel handy to protect your child’s clothes, and prepare a damp cloth to clean up any spills or mistakes. You’ll also need a mirror so that your child can see their design come to life.
Homemade face paint recipe
- 1 tablespoon sorbolene cream per colour
- cornflour (to suit desired consistency)
- food colouring
Mix cornflour into the sorbolene cream until it’s thick but not too dry. Add colouring one drop at a time until you make the desired colour. Apply to the skin in thin coats as thick layers may crack and peel off.
Let the fun begin
Help your child to clean their face first, wiping it with a damp cloth. Using a cotton ball or large brush, encourage them to apply the base colour for their design. Lighter colours should go on first, working from the largest sections of the pattern and adding detail. Dark colours should go on last, using a cotton tip for finishing touches. Each colour needs to dry before applying the next one, unless you are intending to blend the colours while face painting.
When the fun is done
You will only need to use warm water and a cloth to remove our Pure Poppet face paint once the fun is over. Be sure to clean the brushes and sponges too so they are ready to go next time you’re in the mood for a kids face painting session!
